2020-2021 Registration Information

Welcome to Special Olympics Calgary's 2020-2021 Program Season

If you wish to participate in a SOC fall/winter program, please proceed with the registration process, so you’re prepared for the possibility of enrollment if programs continue to run. Due to the restricted numbers of cohort maximums, facility restrictions and confirmed volunteers, we are only able to have a certain number of individuals in our programs. Due to limited numbers allowed in our programs, please understand that you may be on a waitlist until space becomes available in that program. We will notify you of your status in your program, after the selected pilot programs are completed. Spring/Summer program registration will be addressed in the new year.

Important message from Special Olympics Alberta-Calgary’s Affiliate Management Committee members.
Special Olympics Alberta-Calgary’s focus over the past 9 months has been ensuring measures would be in place for a safe return to programs as soon as were allowed to.  Working with many partners, SOCalgary was able to implement safety measures and protocols that enabled us to run a few pilot programs in October, and to check to see if these measures would work for us moving forward.

When SOCalgary shut down our programs in the spring of this year and started up our pilot programs in October, the number of Covid-19 cases were much lower than the current state in our community. While we understand the need to offer programs to our members, our top priority has, and always will be, the health and safety of all our members.

We have been monitoring the Covid-19 numbers in the City of Calgary and paying close attention to Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Deena Hinshaw’s updates. Like everyone, we have been hoping that the Covid-19 positive case numbers would stabilize and start to trend downwards. Dr. Hinshaw recently stated that we are at a critical point with this virus and all of us must do what we can to assist to bring the numbers down.

We understand that Special Olympics programs are extremely important to our members from both a mental and physical perspective. We also know that individuals with an intellectual disability have a heightened risk of contracting Covid-19, so after many discussions, we have made the difficult decision to postpone all sports programs until at least the middle of January 2021. This decision was not made lightly, and a number of factors were taken into consideration.

As an organization, we will continue to do what we can to keep our members engaged and will ensure we provide you with information and updates over the next few months.

Please do your part to limit the spread: wear a mask, social distance, limit social gatherings, wash your hands and stay home when possible.

Stay safe everyone and we look forward to seeing you when it is safe to run our programs again.

Thank you.

Karen Saunders - Chair, Special Olympics Calgary Management Committee
Additional Management Committee members: Siobhan Goguen, Garry McCulloch, Ben Spademan, Val Wahl, Jack Gregory, Wilma Shim, Dr. Katelyn Lowe

Return to Play Considerations

We want you to make an informed decision about if participating in Special Olympics programs is right for you. We encourage you to explore the following resources before completing the registration form:

  • Review Special Olympics Alberta Return to Play Guidelines HERE – these are the basis of all Special Olympics Calgary programs and the guidelines all programs will follow
  • Consider your risk status. It is recommended that High Risk Participants consult with a healthcare provider. All members must read the High Risk Participant document. If you have a health condition that places you at high risk, a doctor approval note will be required before you will be permitted to participate.
  • Watch Special Olympics Canada’s What to Expect VIDEO to see what is expected of you, and how you can prepare for programs to keep yourself and others safe.
The 2020-2021 program year will bring many changes, some known, and many unknown.  Please be prepared that your sport program may look different from what you are used to, and changes to programs may be on an individual program basis.
