Special Olympics Calgary would like to recognize their athletes and volunteers for their efforts over the year


Special Olympics Calgary is proud to have an organization filled with outstanding individuals. Annually, we recognize our ‘Of the Year’ awards, and we would like you to nominate a deserving individual(s), who has stood out in your eyes over the past year.

Please read the descriptions below of the awards we are offering, select the appropriate one, fill the forms out completely, and send us the nominations by May 6th so we can consider your nominee.


 Athlete Nominations Q Display

+      Male & Female Athlete of the Year

In the 2015-2016 program year the nominated athlete must have:
  • shown athletic achievement and development.
  • shown personal development as well as displayed good sportsmanship.
  • been registered and active in Special Olympics

+      Team of the Year

In the 2015-2016 program year the nominated athlete must have:
  • be from the sport of basketball, bocce, curling, floor hockey, soccer or softball.
  • shown athletic achievement and development.
  • displayed sportsmanship and be considerate of fellow teams, athletes, coaches and officials
  • been registered and active in Special Olympics.

+      Athlete Spirit Award

In the 2015-2016 program year the nominated athlete must:
  • be a registered athlete
  • live by the Special Olympics athlete's oath - "Let me win, and if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."
  • be an inspiration to fellow athletes and coaches.
  • show dedication, enthusiasm and always give their best effort
  • exemplify the true meaning of sportsmanship

Volunteer Nominations

+      Male & Female Coach of the Year

In the 2015-2016 program year the coach must have:
  • shown coaching effectiveness and leadership
  • shown personal development as a coach and has helped develop those around them. 
  • be a registered and active coach and made a contribution to sport in Special Olympics

+      Volunteer Leadership Award

In the 2015-16 program year the nominated volunteer must:
  • have filled a volunteer role other than a coach.
  • have made a significant contribution and demonstrated strong leadership.
  • be known and highly respected within his/her region, Province and/or across Canada.
  • be dedicated to the Special Olympics movement and should display characteristics of integrity and exemplary personal conduct.
  • contribute to the overall organization, promotion and development of sport in Special Olympics
  • be a positive role model for the athletes and for other volunteers
  • provide stable and consistent leadership qualities
  • teach and practice cooperation, self-discipline, respect for officials and opponents, and uses proper language
  • should have a minimum of five (5) years of service as a registered Special Olympics volunteer
  • Service clubs or corporations are not eligible.

+      Rising Star Award

In the 2015-16 program year the nominated volunteer or coach must:
  • be a registered volunteer or coach for less than 2 years
  • embrace their new role within Special Olympics and show great promise
  • be open and willing to personal development
  • contribute to the overall organization, promotion and development of sport in Special Olympics
  • be a positive role model for the athletes and for other volunteers
  • teach and practice cooperation, self-discipline, respect for officials and opponents, and uses proper language
