NEW PILOT PROGRAM: Unified Basketball

We are very excited to bring #UnifiedSports to Calgary, as we host our first ever demonstration unified program: basketball!

UNIFIED BALL

WHAT IS UNIFIED SPORTS?

Dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences, Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.

In Unified Sports, teams are made up of individuals with and without disabilities, of similar age and/or ability, which makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. Having sport in common is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away.

Our opponent is intolerance. Only shoulder-to-shoulder, as teammates together, can we defeat it.

Note: Special Olympics Alberta runs a successful Unified program in association with ASAA in schools across the Province. We are pleased to offer an opportunity for our own members to get involved in the Unified movement, as well as any volunteers or Unified partners who would like to participate in our weekly Unified program.

JOIN THE TEAM!

Team sports bring people together. In fact, a half a million people worldwide take part in Unified Sports, breaking down stereotypes. Join and take your place alongside the rest of our global game-changers today:

Get involved as an ATHLETE
An athlete is a registered Special Olympics Calgary member, who has an intellectual disability. Current registered athletes 8 years and older can call the office to sign up for Unified Basketball, or individuals can learn how to register an athlete and fill out the registration forms to sign someone new up with SOC.

Get involved as a UNIFIED PARTNER
A unified partner is an individual without an intellectual disability aged 16 or older, who plays on the team alongside our Special Olympics athletes. To register as a unified partner, please fill out this form, and submit it to the office.

Get involved as a COACH
All our coaches are volunteers. If you would like to coach our unified basketball team, please contact Karen Hurley ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) to obtain the necessary forms to register.

Get involved as a REFEREE
